The Christmas holiday period is always a busy time for travelling around especially on the railway and this year will be no different.
Many services are expected to be extra busy, especially those on Saturdays on the lead up to Christmas when many of you will travel to one of The North?s cities to enjoy the Christmas Markets, do some shopping or go to the theatre or concert.
For the best journey experience we advise customers to try to avoid the busiest times of day (arriving around 1100 and leaving around 1700) as trains at these times will be very popular.
Also, the last train of the day heading out of town is traditionally very busy and it is worth considering travelling earlier if possible.
If you are travelling on Christmas Eve please check your travel details BEFORE you set off to ensure you can complete your journey as services will begin to close down for the Christmas break from approx. 1900hrs.
A summary is available here
There will be no trains operating on our network on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th December major engineering work will be taking place on the West Coast route into London. Whilst not part of our network, customers travelling between the North West and London are expected to travel via alternative routes which include many services operated by First TransPennine Express.
As a result we are expecting very large numbers of passengers to be using our services between:
Manchester and Preston
Manchester and Sheffield (services will only have 3 or 4 carriages on this route)
Unless you hold a reservation for a service on these dates we strongly recommend that you DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL as all trains on the routes listed above will be exceptionally busy and we ask you to consider postponing any unnecessary journeys until Monday 29 December.
Whilst we will have all available trains in service on these two days to provide as many carriages as possible, demand is expected to exceed capacity at some times during the day.
If you do travel, please be advised that at some stations boarding controls will be in place for the safety of all customers and to manage passenger numbers on each train. Please allow additional time to complete your journey as we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate you on your first choice of service.
