Improvement Works

Between Sellafield and Workington

Planned engineering work will take place between Sellafield and Workington from 00:01, Saturday 13 September 2025 to 23:59, Friday 19 September 2025.
All lines will be blocked.
All services will be revised. Engineering work will be taking place between Sellafield and Workington from 00:01 Saturday until 23:59 Friday
Lancaster/Barrow-in-Furness Carlisle: Trains will run to an amended timetable between Lancaster/Barrow-in-Furness and Sellafield, and between Workington and Carlisle.
Carlisle Barrow-in-Furness/Lancaster: Trains will run to an amended timetable between Carlisle and Workington, and between Sellafield and Barrow-in-Furness/Lancaster.
Buses will be provided between Sellafield and Workington (in both directions).
Customer Advice:
Normal journey times are extended by approximately 45 minutes. Please allow extra time for your journey.
Please check station information posters or online for the location of the bus pick up points.

Between Carnforth and Barrow-In-Furness

Planned engineering work will take place between Carnforth and Barrow-In-Furness from 22:40, Monday 15 September 2025 to 05:40, Friday 19 September 2025.
All lines will be blocked.
Some services will be revised. Engineering work will be taking place between Carforth and Barrow-in-Furness from 22:40 to 05:40 each night (finish 05:40 Friday)
The 04:58 (Tuesday to Friday) Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport service will start from Preston. A bus will be provided from Barrow-in-Furness to Lancaster calling all stations except Arnside and Silverdale. A minibus will be provided from Grange-over-Sands to Carnforth to serve these stations.
The 21:59 (Tuesday to Friday) Manchester Airport to Barrow-in-Furness service will terminate at Preston. A bus will be provided from Preston to Barrow-in-Furness calling all stations except Silverdale and Arnside. A minibus will be provided from Carnforth to Grange-over-Sands to serve these stations.
The 22:09 (Tuesday to Friday) Lancaster to Barrow-in-Furness service will not run. A bus will be provided from Lancaster to Barrow-in-Furness calling all stations except Silverdale and Arnside. A minibus will be provided from Carnforth to Grange-over-Sands to serve these stations.

This train may be affected by the following route problem

Alterations to services between Corkickle and Whitehaven

Due to urgent repairs to the railway between Corkickle and Whitehaven the line is closed.

Impact

Train services running through these stations will be terminated at Corkickle and restarted from Whitehaven. Disruption is expected until the end of the day on 31/01/26.

Customer Advice

Services between Corkickle and Whitehaven are being disrupted due to urgent repairs the railway.
Network Rail continue to complete the works on Bransty Tunnel, Whitehaven. The line is closed between Corkickle and Whitehaven (in both directions). Disruption is until further notice, once a time frame for works to be completed has been set we will update our customers.

Effect on service:
Train services are unable to run between Corkickle and Whitehaven (in both directions).
Train services between Lancaster/Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle will terminate at Corkickle and restart between Whitehaven and Carlisle.
Train services between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness/Lancaster will terminate at Whitehaven and restart at Corkickle.
Rail replacement buses will operate between Corkickle and Whitehaven (in both directions),

Alternative travel suggestions:
Northern tickets may be used at no additional cost on Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express services between Carlisle and Lancaster, in both directions, until further notice.
Any ticket restrictions have been lifted during this disruption.

Replacement transport:
Road transport will operate between Corkickle and Whitehaven.
Please speak to station staff, see on-line journey planners or consult Customer Information Screens for departure times.
Please see station information posters for the location of bus pick up points.
Journey times may be extended by up to 60 minutes whilst travelling by road transport.

Lancaster: Lifts out of order

The lifts will be out of order between Platform 3 and the overbridge from now until further notice at Lancaster station.

Additional Information

The lift between the overbridge and platform 3 is currently out of service. Customers who require step free access at this station should speak to a member of staff, or contact the Northern Customer Experience Centre on 0800 200 6060 for further assistance.
Step free access is available by an alternative walking route, please speak to station staff for further assistance.
